Managing the Pain

Ask for your doctor about the pain medications which will help to ease the pain and discomfort for the first few days. You will experience most pain and discomfort post first two to three days after which it will go down. It is normal to have cramps or sudden sharp pain till few days post surgery. Pain in areas which is little away from the area of incision is normal too. Ensure you do not drive while you are on pain killers as often they can make you drowsy.

You may find it a bit painful to move around post surgery be it turning or lowering yourself, getting up from sitting or lying down position. So instead of using stomach area or abs to pull or turn your body, take support of your arms. Hold on something and then move so that the stomach or pelvic area doesn’t feel the pressure. This will help reduce the pain.

You may experience discomfort while urinating, you could feel a burning or an itching sensation. Avoid taking caffeine till your recovery is complete. Speak to your doctor about the pain medication.

During uterine fibroid surgery, the doctors administer carbon dioxide in the abdomen and if some amount of it remains in the body, this can cause pressure to the nerves present under the diaphragm. This can lead to pain in the shoulder area which can be quite sharp during the first few days after surgery. however, this will gradually reduce in the next few days.

Physical Activity

Walking is the best exercises to help you recover and stay fit after fibroid surgery. Talk to your doctor about it since it is generally considered safe to start walking from the very next day post surgery.

Avoid any type of strenuous activity which can put pressure on the incision area. Avoid doing any type of heavy exercising and avoid lifting heavy weights of any type for a few weeks post surgery. Follow your doctor’s instruction to stay away from sex for at least four to six weeks post surgery.

Do not take a shower for the first two to three weeks after surgery. However, clean yourself by taking a regular bath and ensure to keep the incision area dry, else it can get infected. You can also try a sponge bath.

It is natural to feel really tired for at least a few weeks post surgery even when you are at rest and sleep well. While exercising do so for a small amount of time and then take a break. If you feel fatigue is interfering with your daily life, speak to your doctor about it.

Periods, Incision and Bowel

You will experience bleeding, spotting or even a clump sort of discharge for the first few weeks post surgery. This is absolutely normal however if it is accompanied with lot of pain or discomfort, talk to your doctor. The first three to four menstrual cycles can be different either too long or short, heavy or light but after that they will return to normal.

Bruising around the incision area is quite normal. Use an ice pack to soothe this area and reduce bruising or itching.

Avoid foods that could lead to gas or cause discomfort. If you feel pain due or discomfort due to gas build-up then walking or lying down on your back and bending your legs can help. Check with your doctor if nothing helps. You can also experience bloating which is quite normal post surgery and will go away on its own.
